Mondly review (2026): what the free version gives you, and what Premium costs
Mondly is a fair pick if you want short daily vocabulary and phrase practice for little money, and a poor pick if you want grammar explained in depth or a real conversation partner. Premium cost €12.99 a month, or €59.99 a year for one language or for all 33 languages, on the in-app page we checked on 27 October 2026. The yearly all-languages plan is the obvious one if you pay at all: same price as one language. The free version is enough to judge the style: we did a daily lesson, a category lesson and the start of the chatbot without paying.

What we tested
We used a free Mondly account the site owner created, on the web app, in a French interface, learning English (US). We tested on two days:
- 21 October 2026: lesson 1 practice in the Hello category, and the Premium screen.
- 27 October 2026: the Daily Lesson (five exercises, all answered), the chatbot’s first topic up to the point where it needs the microphone, and the Premium screen again.
We did not pay for Premium. We can’t evaluate audio quality or speech recognition, so this review says nothing about how well Mondly hears your pronunciation.
The Daily Lesson
The home screen shows a Daily Lesson with a calendar, plus a Weekly quiz and a Monthly quiz. Our lesson on 27 October 2026 ran through five quick exercise types:
- Picture choice: “(une) fête”, pick the right picture among four (party, music, friend, candy).
- Fill the blank from a word bank: “Il y a une fête ce soir.” → “There is a ___ tonight.”
- Spelling with letter tiles: “ami” → f-r-i-e-n-d.
- Word bank: “Nous bavardons avec nos amis.” → “We chat with our ___.”
- Multiple choice: “music” → musique.
The sixth exercise asked us to transcribe audio, which we stopped at because we can’t hear it.
The best thing we found: tap any word in a sentence and Mondly shows its translation and the verb’s conjugation. Tapping “a” in “Il y a une fête” opened the present tense of avoir with each form next to its English equivalent. That’s useful for a beginner who would otherwise guess.

Mondly Daily Lesson, word popup with conjugation (web, French interface, 27 October 2026).
The Daily Lesson used French prompts and went both ways (French to English and English to French). The Hello category lesson we did on 21 October was different: English only, with no French on the screens we saw, so it suits someone who already has the basics.
The chatbot
Mondly’s chatbot has 8 topics (Bonjour, Restaurant, Hôtel, Billets, Conversation, Faire du shopping and more). On our free account, only the first one could be started; the others showed “Débloquer” (unlock), so the chatbot is mostly a Premium feature.
The bot writes a line in English with the French translation under it. A panel below suggests what you can answer (“Hello.” / “Good afternoon.” / “Hi!”), each with a translation and an audio button. You answer by holding the microphone button; there are toggles for translations and automatic playback. It’s a guided dialogue with suggested answers, not an open conversation. The onboarding wouldn’t let us continue without the microphone, so we stopped there.

Price: what Premium costs
The in-app Premium screen (prices in euros) showed, on both 21 and 27 October 2026:
- 1 month, one language: €12.99 a month.
- 12 months, one language: €59.99 (€5.00 a month).
- 12 months, all 33 languages: €59.99 (€5.00 a month), labelled “Populaire”, next to a crossed-out €599.90 and a “-90%” badge.
On 21 October the screen also showed an “only today” countdown timer; on 27 October it didn’t, and the price was the same. Treat the crossed-out price and the countdown as sales devices: €59.99 a year looks like the normal price.
For comparison, Babbel’s 12-month plan was €95.88 on its official prices page when we checked on 21 October 2026, and Duolingo’s free version costs nothing. See our price tracker for dated prices.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Cheap if paid yearly, and all 33 languages cost the same as one.
- Tap-to-translate with conjugation tables helps beginners.
- Varied short exercises; a daily lesson takes a few minutes.
- A free version that’s enough to try the style before paying.
Cons
- The chatbot is guided, with suggested answers, and mostly locked on the free version.
- The Hello category lesson we tried was in English only, which is hard for a true beginner.
- Grammar is shown word by word, not explained in lessons the way Babbel does.
- Sales pressure on the Premium screen (crossed-out price, countdown on one day).
Mondly vs Babbel vs Duolingo
- Mondly for short, cheap daily practice, especially if you want several languages on one plan.
- Babbel for structured courses with grammar explained and dialogues, at a higher price. See our Babbel review.
- Duolingo if you want to start free and keep a daily streak. See Babbel vs Duolingo.
None of the three replaces speaking with a person. For that, a tutor marketplace like italki is the next step; our italki review covers prices.
FAQ
Is Mondly free? Partly. On our free account, the Daily Lesson, the first lesson of the Hello category and the first chatbot topic were available without paying. Other chatbot topics needed Premium.
How much is Mondly Premium? On the in-app page in euros on 27 October 2026: €12.99 a month, or €59.99 a year for one language or for all 33 languages.
Is Mondly good for beginners? The Daily Lesson is, thanks to French prompts and tap-to-translate. The Hello category lesson we tried was in English only, so start with the Daily Lesson.
Does Mondly teach Arabic? Mondly’s App Store listing says 33 languages are free to try; check the language list in the app for Arabic and for your interface language. We only tested English from French.
